The present Collection is, in essence, the second, corrected and supplemented, edition of the Collection "The main directions of scientific activities of Neutron Research Department of PNPI of the RAS" published in Russian in connection with the 25th anniversary of official proclamation of the establishment of Petersburg (Leningrad) Nuclear Physics Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences.
Repeating what was written by me earlier in the foreword to the first edition, I should say that in reality the history of appearance of "neutron direction" at Gatchina have to do with the second half of the fifties of the last century, when under the leadership of Professor Lev Il'ich Rusinov in the nuclear branch of A.F.Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute of AS of the USSR in forestland near Gatchina the research beam reactor WWR-M was built and put into operation.
The main results of investigations carried out at this reactor for past years are stated in this Collection. An acquaintance with it will permit readers to obtain an idea about the history of the making up and the development of the Nuclear Research Department (Laboratory in the past), as well as about the scientific potential of its personnel. By doing this we did not aim at the single scheme of representing the material: some articles are written in form of reminiscences, others are presented as scientific reports. But in my view such an approach only facilitates reading and perception of what is written.
The introductory article of the Collection "History review of neutron research in PNPI" written by Professors A.P.Serebrov and A.I.Okorokov, who are the headers of the main scientific divisions of the Department, and published in part in journal Neutron News, Vol.11, No2, p.18, 2000 in connection with forty years of the WWR-M reactor, gives full enough survey of scientific activities of the Department as a whole, which releases me from the necessity to do that in the foreword. Articles of the headers of individual scientific directions succeed later.
It seems to me that the reader, getting acquainted with the present Collection, will agree with the assertion that the first-class scientific school has been formed on the basis of NRD of PNPI. The fact that the creation of the high flux beam reactor PIK, which is the first in our country, was decided to realize at Gatchina, should be explained by the existence of this school. Yes, due to plain reasons the construction of the reactor was delayed for long years to come. But it was never stopped. And today, when our country begins to come out of a crisis, it seems "the light is seen in the end of a tunnel": we hope to bring about a physical start-up of the PIK reactor in the end of 2003. And we invite the world scientific community of neutron-physicists to prepare proposals and instruments for investigations at the beams of this new reactor.
